Table of Contents

Whitewater rafting is an outdoor adventure sport that challenges you to navigate fast-flowing rivers aboard an inflatable raft. Whitewater rafting is usually a group activity, and teams work together to steer around rocks and obstacles, over drops and through canyons.

It’s one of the most fun and exhilarating outdoor activities, as long as you don’t mind getting wet!

Rafting in Costa Rica offers many highlights. Here are a few:

  • A range of experiences from gentle, family-friendly meanders through to exhilarating, technically challenging rapids
  • Well-organized tours with experienced guides and mandatory safety equipment
  • A tour through the spectacular scenery of lush jungle and gushing waterfalls
  • Incredible biodiversity, including monkeys, toucans and sloths
  • Year-round adventures; you can raft every month of the year
  • Accessible routes without long drives to the starting point.

A Note on Rapid Classes

River rapids are classified by the challenge they offer. Class I would be scenic with only small waves. Class VI would be unnavigable. Most Costa Rica rafting tours feature rapids ranging from Class III (fun, safe, but exciting) to Class V (fast, unpredictable rapids that require expertise).

Where is the best rafting in Costa Rica? There are lots of great spots throughout the mountainous central regions of the country, where the water begins its fast descent down the hills in search of the Pacific Ocean or Caribbean Sea.

We particularly recommend two rivers, both easily reached from San Jose and the Los Sueños Resort, in either a three-quarter or full-day Los Sueños rafting tour.

Río Savegre

The Savegre River takes you through spectacular wilderness, with some particularly family-friendly sections. It’s known for its crystal clear water that flows 28 miles through Class II and III rapids from the mountains out into the Pacific Ocean.

Individuals and families with children aged eight and over can take a full-day rafting tour of the Savegre from Los Sueños all year round.

Río Naranjo

The Naranjo River is shorter and deeper, making its lower sections ideal for adrenaline-seeking beginners. The upper section of El Chorro, however, is not for the faint of heart. El Chorro offers intense Class IV-V rapids and amazing waterfalls

Over 16s can experience El Chorro on a tour from Los Sueños Resort from January to May. During the rainy season (May to December), anyone over the age of eight can tour the Class III and IV rapids.

There are two main seasons for Costa Rica rafting. The dry season offers the best variety of experiences, although tours are available year-round

Dry Season

The dry season from December to April is when the rivers are generally calmer and the rapids easier to navigate. This means there are plenty of options for beginners. Some rapids, however, are navigable only during the drier months. El Chorro is an example of this.

Green Season

Between May and November, water levels are higher and the rapids more intense. If you are an experienced rafter looking for a challenge on rapids of Class III upwards, this is a good time to raft in Costa Rica since the crowds are smaller.

Costa Rica rafting has a good safety record, but it is a sport with inherent risks. To maximize your safety, choose a certified tour operator that provides:

  • Professional guides
  • Mandatory safety gear, including life jackets, helmets, and paddles
  • An overview of rapid classes and difficulty levels on the route

In addition, you should have age and weight restrictions, as well as emergency procedures, explained to you.

These are the current costs of our rafting tours from Los Sueños Resort:

  • Naranjo River, Class III – $99 + tax
  • El Chorro – $115 + tax
  • Savegre River – $115 + tax (full day)

On a good full- or three-quarter-day rafting tour, expect the following to be included:

  • Pick up from your hotel or nearby and all transportation to the river, perhaps around an hour or two’s drive away if you are staying on the coast.
  • An experienced bilingual guide
  • A midday meal and drinks throughout the day
  • Safety equipment and a safety briefing.

You will need to bring swimwear and suitable footwear, such as water shoes. Don’t forget to have spare clothes, bug spray and sunscreen with you.

Los Sueños Resort and Marina can be your home in this tropical paradise. Aside from offering rafting tours direct from its luxury coastal accommodation, Los Sueños tours offer more adventures by kayak and catamaran, to the rainforest, mangroves and secret beaches, or teach you about local art and culture.

Is it safe to whitewater raft in Costa Rica?

Whitewater rafting in Costa Rica is generally safe when booked through a certified tour operator. Reputable operators provide professional bilingual guides, mandatory safety equipment plus a full safety briefing before departure. Operators also enforce age and weight restrictions appropriate to each river and rapid class.

How much does Arenal rafting cost?

Rafting tours in Costa Rica, including those in Arenal, typically range from around $99 to $115 plus tax, depending on the river and difficulty level. Tours are generally all-inclusive, covering transport, a bilingual guide, safety equipment, and a midday meal, making them excellent value for the experience offered. For an exact quote, please contact the tour operator directly.

What happens if it rains heavily during the tour?

Light to moderate rain is normal in Costa Rica and does not typically stop a rafting tour. In fact, rain can enhance the experience by raising water levels and intensifying rapids. If conditions become too dangerous, certified operators will delay, reroute, or cancel a descent. Guides monitor river conditions closely and prioritize safety above all else.
