Quick May Snapshot
Offshore | Inshore | Conditions | Stand-out Boats |
---|---|---|---|
Sailfish 15 – 30 mi out; daily double & triple hook-ups | Big roosterfish prowling rocky points & river mouths | Classic “green-season” pattern – glassy mornings, cooling afternoon showers | Sueltalo 2, Spanish Fly, Ambition |
Early blue marlin showing in the spread | Cubera snapper, jacks, mackerel; occasional snook | Seas 1 – 3 ft early; 83 – 85 °F water temps |
What We’re Catching
Offshore – Billfish Bonanza
May kept the billfish bite sizzling. Trolling ballyhoo 20 – 30 miles offshore produced steady sailfish releases, while early-season blue marlin crashed teasers for lucky crews. Dorado were thinner than March/April but still stacked up around current lines and flotsam.
Yellowfin Tuna Frenzy
Spinner-dolphin pods led captains to 40- to 150-pound tuna almost daily. Chunking and popper sessions yielded multiple fish over 100 lbs—perfect dock-side sashimi material.
Inshore – Roosters Rule
Inside Herradura Bay, roosterfish stole the show. Light-tackle anglers drifted live sardines along Punta Agujitas and Isla Herradura for fish pushing 40 lbs. Cubera snapper ambushed jigs on reef edges, with jack crevalle filling the gaps between trophy bites.

Tactics That Worked in May
- Shallow teasers raised more sailfish; switching to a skipjack or bonito pitch bait tempted marlin.
- Follow the life: diving birds and spinner dolphins pinpointed ripping yellowfin schools.
- Inshore mobility: half-day charters hop-scotched structure along the coastline to keep lines tight.
- Early launches: lines in by 7 a.m. delivered most trophy hookups before afternoon showers rolled through.
